Mario Banožić was born on March 10, 1979 in Vinkovci. He graduated from the Faculty of Economics in Osijek in 2002, after which he completed postgraduate scientific studies in 2008, and in 2013 earned the title of Doctor of Science in Economics. He got his first professional opportunity in 2003 as a commercialist in the company Santini, then in 2004 he became the general manager of Son‑Ugo‑Cor, and in 2005 he moved to the public sector as an expert associate in the county Vukovar-Srijem.

He soon progressed in the public service — he held a number of positions: head of the Tourism and Culture Sector, head of internal audit, and director of Vinkovac Television. In 2017, he became the head of the State Administration Office of the Vukovar-Srijem County, and the following year he was appointed Minister of State Property. He was taken over as Minister of Defense on July 23, 2020, and held that position until November 11, 2023.

Banožić is a member of the HDZ and is active in party and professional associations — among other things, he is the president of the Croatian Marketing Association (Cromar) and is a member of the Vinkovci Hunting Society. It was found that he had 0.21 per thousand of alcohol in his blood and was not tied with a belt. The police reported him, and the Municipal Court in Vinkovci confirmed the indictment in November 2024 – he faces a sentence of up to 8 years in prison.
